PGA West is the resort that established La Quinta as a destination of consequence. Not merely a desert escape, but a place serious enough to host a PGA Tour event for more than four decades. The six courses here range from the player-friendly to the genuinely demanding, and the Stadium Course has a reputation that precedes it. Pete Dye designed it to test the best, and it still does. Beyond the golf, the setting does its own work. The Santa Rosa Mountains frame the eastern edge of the valley and hold the light differently at every hour. Mornings are cool and clear. Afternoons go golden. By evening the mountains go dark and the desert air drops fast. La Quinta itself is worth knowing. Old Town is a short drive from the gates, with good restaurants, a farmers market on Saturday mornings, and the kind of main street that rewards a slow walk. The Coachella Valley has grown considerably around it, but La Quinta has kept its pace.
